You may think that they are the same but there is actually a difference between the two.

Gospel music was born during the late 19th century from religious Negros in the American south.

Most of these Negro slaves were illiterate so they were taught the Christian faith through call-and-response songs.

In this singing style, a leader sings a line or a phrase and the groups repeats it.

The chorus or refrain is usually sung by everyone. It has a very simple structure as it has repetitive lyrics.

But the emotion is from the heart.

This is the main thing that differentiates such music from others.

The motto in singing gospel music is to “make joyful noise unto the Lord!”

The key on how to sing gospel is to have fun and relax.

However, this does not mean that you should take the vocal technique for granted.

Singing gospel music is one of the most difficult musical styles to master.

It is going to take you hours of constant practice to be able to be good at it.

The first step in how to sing gospel is to control your breathing through the Fontanelli exercise.

In this exercise, you count to four while slowly inhaling through your mouth.

Count another four when you slowly exhale.

You should watch yourself in the mirror while doing this and make sure to expand your abdomen while you breathe in.

It should remain open as you slowly exhale.

As you do this exercise repeatedly, try to increase your count until it reaches eight.

When it reaches eight, add a hold phase.  In between inhaling and exhaling you should hold your breath for four seconds.

Focus next on the dynamics. Take a good breath and sing a particular pitch at the middle of your range.

Start softly when you sing the pitch then gradually sing louder at the middle of the pitch then sing softer again until you end your singing.

Lastly, to know how to sing gospel, try to sing the song with expression.

Read the texts like a poem and understand them and try to determine how you feel about the song. Also, try to watch videos of great gospel singers.

Most of all you should enjoy how to sing gospel, because after all, when you sing for the Lord, you pray twice!
