Tessitura is you comfortable vocal range. These are the notes that you can sustain without straining your voice. This is essential to know how to sing higher.

In learning how to sing high notes, you must determine first what your tessitura is.

By knowing your tessitura, you can now find out if it is possible for you to be able to raise it.

The key to raising your tessitura is your breathing with upper resonance.

Singing using your throat is a big no-no in singing high notes as it contributes to the strain in your voice.

In learning how to sing higher notes, use your abdomen, diaphragm, and spinals.

When you breathe in, your abdomen should be expanded to the fullest for maximum air support.

In exhaling keep everything open except your abdomen, which controls air flow.

The next thing in how to sing higher is to focus on is your head voice. This is known as the upper resonance.

You should think of that note that you are trying to reach as something that is vertical rather than thinking that it is in a horizontal position.

It is essential that you be able to actually feel any vibration that should rise from your lungs to your soft palate and up to your sinuses just like how an elevator ascends.

Your mouth should be tall vertically.

You should sing lightly, do not force anything. Do a vocal siren or what is also known as a yawn slide.

In a yawn slide, you should make sure your mouth is open like you are going to yawn.

Then make a strong supported breath. As you exhale, say “hee” or “hoo” and start from the highest pitch down to the lowest.

Repeat the activity again but with a higher pitch.

In vocal sirens it’s the same except for here, you start from the lowest note up to the highest you can reach and you hum it instead of saying hee or hoo.

The last exercise that you have to do is to do a five-tone scale that should be ascending and also descending.

In these exercise you can buzz, the vowel sounds ‘oo’ or ‘aa’. The pattern usually makes use of the notes do-re-mi-fa-so-fa-mi-re-do.

Then you should start with your comfortable pitch and repeat it with half a step higher than the first.

After you have reached the highest pitch in your range, go down until you’ve reached your lowest pitch.

A good breathing support is needed in this exercise.

Raising your tessitura is not easy; it requires practice, persistence and patience.

But when you have done it, you will surely you will be singing higher.
